EARLY EDUCATION AND CAREER

Mr. Carmichael began his career as a law clerk to Judge William J. Bauer of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit, taught law students as an Adjunct Professor of Law at DePaul University, and immediately before joining Henderson Parks, was a partner at the international law firm of Holland & Knight LLP. He earned his Juris Doctor with honors at DePaul University College of Law and Certificate in Financial Markets Compliance from Chicago-Kent College of Law.

LEGAL PRACTICE

Mr. Carmichael provides general counseling and advice to business in structuring agreements, handling vendor relationships, and addressing employee issues.  Mr. Carmichael has negotiated and documented joint ventures, partnerships, non-disclosure agreements (NDAs), licenses, leases, warranties, indemnities, and vendor agreements for clients.  He also advises clients on interpreting agreements, such as employee contracts, non-competes/non-solicitations, indemnity provisions, and limitations of liability and exclusions.

Mr. Carmichael’s corporate clients include businesses in retailing, manufacturing, technology, and the services industry, and range from companies with several million dollars in annual revenue to publicly traded companies with billions of dollars in annual revenue.

Mr. Carmichael’s commercial dispute resolution practice covers written contracts, antitrust, false and deceptive marketing, fraud, consumer fraud, trademarks and copyrights, and mass and class actions.  Mr. Carmichael uses early resolution and ADR wherever appropriate to resolve matters quickly and efficiently for clients.  Where a negotiated solution is not possible, Mr. Carmichael has prosecuted and defended cases from filing of the complaint through trial in state and federal courts and in arbitration.

Mr. Carmichael is also an experienced appellate advocate, on both civil and criminal matters, having briefed and argued more than fifty appeals in state and federal appellate courts, including the Eighth Circuit, Seventh Circuit, Illinois Appellate Court, Tennessee Supreme Court, Illinois Supreme Court, and United States Supreme Court.

SERVICE

Mr. Carmichael is on the Board of Directors for the Federal Bar Association, Chicago Chapter. He also serves on the Advisory Board for the DePaul Center for Public Interest Law.

Mr. Carmichael’s previous service affiliations include: member of the Associate Board for CARPLS, member of the Rules Committee for the Appellate Associate Board, chair of the Young Lawyers Section (YLS) Client Development and Firm Economics Committee for the Chicago Bar Association, and an investigator for the Judicial Evaluation Committee of the Chicago Bar Association.

HONORS AND AWARDS

Mr. Carmichael’s honors and awards include: the Business Litigation award and Rising Star award from the Illinois Super Lawyers magazine.
